I was so happy to usher in a new year. I actually wished I could close my eyes and make my whole sophomore year of college to start over. But as that wasn’t possible, hopefully, my New Year’s resolution of just being thankful and not taking anything for granted would allow me to have peace. I mean, how could I not be thankful? God had spared my life from a fire and allowed me to stop a cop’s attack, and I’d survived not getting shot in a club where pandemonium had rung out. But in all three incidents, it wasn’t like I had come away completely unscathed. I had witnessed tragedy.

Ms. Mayzee was dead. Her mom was now raising three little ones with barely a dime. Because being an attorney was something I was thinking seriously about, I had been closely following the prosecution of G-Dogg and all the boys who had shot up the club, as well as the civil suits against the cops. In the latter situation, people were going to lose their jobs. During the tornado, the town of Conway had lost homes and five people, and people’s personal prized possessions were also gone. On top of all that, I had made a bad decision and let Covin go. I had told him we needed time apart so I could sow my wild oats. And, boy, did the oats sow me.

Morgan dropped out of the contest, and so did nine other participants, so we were now down to ten. The chapter sorors who thought I couldn’t do it talked about me instead of rallying around to help me find other contestants or make sure the ones we had were successful. I only had my line sisters to count on. As I stood at a rally I had put together myself for the campus and community to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I heard Covin speak, and I was inspired.

“You see, nowadays we have cell phones, computers, and e-mail to do all this communication, and some of us still don’t answer the call. Back in the 1960s, there was a man who stood up for what he believed in. He gave his life so we could live better. It doesn’t matter if you think life isn’t fair—don’t crawl under a rock, don’t take the path of least resistance, and don’t try to save yourself without taking a page from this man’s phenomenal life. If not you, then who? If you don’t help someone succeed, who’s gonna save you from falling? We are Western Smith College, and we are tomorrow’s future. We have no excuses. We can change the world.”

Covin was so strong, and it wasn’t only because he was saying powerful things but because you could tell from his demeanor and his presence and from the way the crowd was listening to him that he really believed those things. I already knew I had messed up things between us. But just watching him up there doing his thing and motivating a group of unmoved and tired college students made me wish I had him back.
